While this blog is about Gracie’s canine renal failure, earlier this month, we lost Gracie’s sister Sofie, our chow mix that we rescued as a stray after finding her on a street corner in Washington, DC. Sofie took on a lot of responsibility during Gracie’s illness – they are shown here on the front porch a few minutes before we took Gracie to another vet appointment. Faithful Sofie looks like she is watching over her sick sister.
So for the moment we are…dogless. But just the thought of these two girls bring up so many fond memories of our more than fourteen years together. They were a treasure.

Your heart must be broken. Our thoughts are with you. Maybe the girls are now together somewhere, young, fit and running about playing with each other again! Remember them that way. I am sure you spent many happy hours playing with them and many happy walks with them.
Interestingly, we thought Molly’s sister would be the same way as Sophie. (Molly has CRF at the moment) Her name is Tess and she can be quite sensitive but, to our amazement she is enjoying being top dog (Molly’s role for all Tess’s life). Not only that, Tess gets the treats and food that Molly doesn’t want to eat. She is getting fat! We think we know dogs, but they do react in ways we don’t expect!
I know first-hand what it’s like having a dog with kidney disease. My beagle suffered with it for 4.5 months. Towards the end, there were days when she would have the energy to go for a nice slow walk. I remember our last walk together just a couple of days before I lost her right before Christmas. Remember the good times and I’m sure there will be another dog who will give you new laughs and memories.
